| In August 1983, the Office of Technology Assessment presented a report to Congress with policy options "designed to enhance the advantages of U.S. producers in international markets, to provide research and development in forest management, environmental effects of forestry and wood materials science, and to improve the productivity of U.S. forestry." An important recommendation of this assessment was to establish centers for wood utilization research. Congress authorized the program and appropriated funds for the first time in 1985. This is the 17th year for the Eastern Hardwood Utilization Program at Michigan State University. The Eastern Hardwood Utilization Program is one of the nine national wood utilization research centers. | |
