Preparing Resource and Environmental Managers with International Understandings and Merits (PREMIUM)

A Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program in China

Recruitment and Support

Applicants can be from Michigan State University or other institutions. They should be primarily college juniors and seniors in natural resources, forest sciences, environmental management, international studies, social sciences, and other relevant majors.

The main criteria for selection are students’ interest, research outline, and academic excellence. Their GPA must be higher than 3.0; their essay must demonstrate both strong interest in international resource and environmental management, and well-thought out research ideas; and their references should give favorable evaluation of their performance, their inter-personal skills, work ethic, and research readiness. Chinese language proficiency is a plus, but is not required.

Selected candidates will be interviewed in person or by phone. Once a student is chosen, a formal letter of acceptance will be mailed to him or her, along with an information packet that will include a study abroad handbook, a collection of readings, and other necessary documents, such as Decision Form and Statement of Responsibility.

Accepted students will be advised to start developing a research proposal, prepare travel documents, and visit a travel health clinic as soon as possible. They are encouraged to stay in touch with the program advisors..

With funding from the National Science Foundation, the program will cover all the expenses for travel, lodging, and operations. Moreover, to mitigate the lost earnings from their summer jobs, a stipend will be provided for each of the participants.
